Many stories exist about mythological gods and goddesses placing stars in the sky. After the Titan Atlas was forced to carry the heavens on his shoulders, Orion began to pursue all of the Pleiades (the seven daughters of Atlas and the sea-nymph Pleione). In order to comfort their father, Zeus transformed the sisters first into doves, and then into stars, immortalizing them in the heavens. Orion is said to still pursue them across the night sky.

Heracles placed the constellation Leo in the night sky after defeating the Nemean lion as the first of his 12 Labors. Zeus's brother Poseidon placed Cassiopeia's throne in the sky, where its distinctive "W" shape continues to circle the celestial pole.
