Part I | South Pacific | Cancer the Crab
The weaver saw Cassie within the orange flames of her hearth fire. Cassie was sitting on the magic carpet astride the black horse as they flew through the midnight sky. Kirti watched the horse and rider flying through the starlit inky darkness until they faded into the flames of her fire.
The carpet shifted slightly on Sattar's back and another scene came to life. A cloudy, turquoise blue sea surrounded by red rock walls on either side. A small girl was swimming down the middle, her arms bent at the elbow, swimming freestyle slowly through the canyon.
The South Pacific
Violet was young and she swam alone in calm, turquoise waters. She paddled with her arms in front of her, slowly lifting one arm after the other to move through the opaque, aquamarine water. A wide canyon stretched ahead of her far off into the distance. The red cliffs stretched high above the water. Violet took a breath and kept swimming. She wondered what had happened to everyone else she knew. She didn't see any people inside the canyon and there weren't any boats either. It was as if she had been left behind and the rest had all gone away someplace else.
Violet kept swimming until the canyon was behind her. She left behind her a small coastline of palm trees and sand and kept swimming. Violet saw in the distance a long stretch of empty, windswept sand with a few scattered palm trees surrounded by crystal clear aquamarine waters. The sun was high in the sky overhead and she swam toward a deserted island spit with no one on it. Violet was very small, so she stopped to rest.
